‪‎Varnett‬ once again will join MLK Grande Parade

The Varnett charter school will participate for the fifth time in a parade Monday in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 72 female cheerleaders will come from the Northeast Campus, said Ms. Anna Medina, the NE parent liaison who organized Varnett's participation in the event. The kindergarten through 5th grade students were selected based on academic performance, school attendance and good conduct, Ms. Medina said.

The 22nd Annual MLK Grande Parade will start at 10 a.m. in Midtown near Houston Community College-Central. The parade’s theme is “It Takes a Village” and will emphasize a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The one-mile parade will feature 15 floats and 30 marching bands. The announced grand marshal is Rushion McDonald, a University of Houston alumnus, filmmaker and executive producer of the “Steve Harvey Show.”

"I’m the Grand Marshal of the MLK Parade in Houston, Texas and I’m from the Hood! “Why Not You!” Today is your day too,” Mr. McDonald said on his Facebook page.

Those in attendance will have a chance to catch one of 500 stress balls with Varnett’s logo on it, Ms. Medina said.

The participants practiced on Tuesdays for the past month and will wear royal blue outfits. She said she customarily arranges to have students take part in the parade because “it boosts their self esteem and allows them to show their school spirit."
