Celebrating Cinco de Mayo – A Moment of History and Heritage

Today, we join many across the nation and beyond in recognizing Cinco de Mayo, a day that commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when a determined Mexican force achieved a significant victory over a much larger and better-equipped French army. While not Mexico’s Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16), Cinco de Mayo has become a symbol of resilience, pride, and cultural heritage.

In the United States, this day also offers a special opportunity to honor the rich contributions of Mexican-American communities to our schools, neighborhoods, and society at large. From music and art to food and family traditions, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of history, identity, and unity.

We wish you all a joyful and meaningful Cinco de Mayo. May today remind us of the power of perseverance and the beauty of cultural diversity that strengthens our district every day.
