January is School Board Recognition Month

January is a time to recognize Varnett’s newly-appointed school board members and the crucial role they play in establishing district policy in education and administration.

These special individuals voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing this school district. The newly-installed members are Dr. Matthew Plummer, Jr., president; Dr. Edgardo Colon, vice president; Mr. Clarence White, III, secretary; Mr. Kenneth Groovey and Mrs. Marcia Johnson. Varnett’s interim superintendent, Dr. Margaret Stroud, serves as a non-voting  board member.

Dr. Plummer holds a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from The Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated Cum Laude. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Plummer serves as professor and chief of community dentistry for Harris Health System.

Dr. Colon operates a law practice with an emphasis on contracts and other commercial transactions, public finance, corporations, partnerships and commercial lending. Since 2008, Dr. Colon has served as visiting professor of Political Science, Department of Social Studies, University of Houston-Downtown.

Mr. White is assistant vice president/commercial lending at Lone Star Bank in Houston.  He has held the position since 2007. He manages a $27.2 million loan portfolio and develops new business opportunities, including commercial, real estate and equipment loans.

Mr. Groovey has 40 years of experience in accounting, finance, administration and management in both private and public organizations.  The senior financial analyst earned an MBA in accounting in 1978 at the University of Houston. He is a former executive board member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Mrs. Johnson has been a professor at Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University since September 1998. Subjects taught include Business Associations including Corporations, Professional Responsibility, Civil Procedure and Real Estate Transactions. In 1999, Mrs. Johnson was interim dean of the law school and was in charge of the day-to-day operations.
