Varnett cheerleaders take on the rodeo during Black Heritage Day

Varnett's cheerleaders made a trip to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today, March 11, 2022, and everybody had a great time in what was billed as Black Heritage Day.

The teams, 40 from Southwest and 16 from Northeast campuses, braved the cool weather and were among more than 3,000 cheerleaders performing on the “Stars Over Texas” stage at NRG Park. Committee members said the event was a chance to show creativity. These same cheerleaders performed in the MLK Day parade in Houston on January 17, 2022.

Northeast second-grader Erin Crawford appeared on air with TV personality and meteorologist Star Harvey from KIAH/CW 39 Houston. See the video here at the 14:10 mark.

On Black Heritage Day, visitors learn how vital the Black cowboy was in shaping today's Western culture.

Sixth-grade teacher Ms. Amber Green said the students went on rides, saw the animals and played games.
