Eligibility guidelines for free and reduced price meals program

Eligibility for free or reduced-price meals is determined by your household size and income level. To determine if your family qualifies for the 2012-13 school year, please locate your household size by clicking below. You may qualify for the National School Lunch Program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established new and improved nutrition standards for school lunches as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Act.

The Varnett Public School will implement these changes in the 2012-13 school year, a year before the regulations are mandated to take effect. This means that Varnett will offer additional whole grain products and will increase the number of servings of fruit and vegetables.

The following is a breakdown of the new components:

1. Students must choose a minimum of 1/2 cup of vegetables or fruit each day.
2. A variety of vegetables are now being offered.
3. All grains are now whole-grain.
4. Milk options will be 1 percent or fat free.
5. Juice (4 percent) will no longer be an option at lunch.
6. Calories, sodium and saturated fats are now required to be within a certain range.
