English As a Second Language training for Varnett parents

Varnett parents are taking English as a Second Language classes to improve their overall communications skills. The federal and state-funded program is designed to help parents become more equipped to join a very competitive work environment and to enable them to help their children with their homework.

Houston Community College administers the program and Houston-area schools provide the classrooms. The classes continue until late May and the last enrollment period for the school year is March 23-25.

Ronald Anderson, teacher supervisor for the HCC's Adult Education program, said the community college provides ESL and other courses at more than 85 sites throughout the service area of the Houston Independent School District, which includes Varnett. The classes are being held at all three Varnett campuses.
For more information on the ESL program for adults please call Varnett at 713-667-4051 or HCC at 713-718-5400.
