In a letter to Superintendent M. Annette Cluff, the Texas congressman said:

"It is my pleasure to offer you congratulations for The Varnett Public School-East Campus receiving the prestigious recognition of a National Blue Ribbon School. I am honored to have a school in my district receive this award.

"Once again, congratulations on your success. Your accomplishments are those to be admired...."

Varnett already has received letters of congratulations from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and and State Sen. Florence Shaprio, chairwoman of the Committee on Education.

Texas School Business, a magazine that covers education in the state, also acknowledged Varnett for its achievement.

The East Campus, under the leadership of 2009-2010 campus director Twilet Alexander, earned the prestigious award for its high performing students and for being ranked among the top 10 percent of schools in Texas as measured by its performance on state assessments. The award was issued by the U.S. Department of Education.
