Varnett chess club takes second place in team, individual categories

The Varnett Public School teamed up with Yellowstone Academy and the Texas Home School Association to take second place in the Scholastic Club chess tournament at Kipp Zenith Academy on May 21, 2022.

In addition, seventh-grader Isaiah Johnson won a second-place individual award in the advanced section of the tournament.

Other members of the Varnett team, all from the Southwest campus, are eighth-grader Curtis Johnson, sixth-grader Patrick Walker and fourth-grader Terence Green.

The team is coached by Mr. Richard Burton. Mr. Burton's cousin, seven-year-old Amira Guzman and a member of the Texas Home School Association team, won a third-place medal in her competition against middle schoolers. She was the youngest person in the tournament.

Other schools participating included The Joy School, River Oaks Baptist School, Kipp Academy, Alvin High School and Academy of Accelerated Learning.

Congratulations again, Varnett team, for a job well done!
