The Varnett Public School, along with districts across the nation, will implement new federal school meal standards. The menus will feature more whole grains and increased variety of fruits and vegetables. All students will be required to select at least one fruit and vegetable serving to complete a meal. A complete meal consists of protein-rich foods, whole grains and a variety of vegetables, fruits and milk.

Students must take 3 of 5 components (one of which must be a fruit or vegetable) for the meal to be considered reimbursable. Meals that are reimbursable and contain the minimum number of components will be priced as a unit meal. Students who do not choose the minimum requirements for a reimbursable meal will be charged.

In August 2012, as required under the United States Department of Agriculture Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, elementary students who eat in the cafeteria must take a ½ cup of fruit and/or vegetable with two other meal components. Food components include meat, grain, fruit, vegetable and milk.

Do I have to fill out a new application each year?
Yes, A new application is needed at the beginning of every school year. Application is sent home with students on the first week of school. Application is also available at every campus office and cafeteria.
If you were approved for free or reduce meals at The Varnett Public School at end of the school year, your status will be in effect for the first 30 days of school or until we receive a new application.
