Former Varnett student Madalyn Hernandez dazzled students and staff with her singing during a campus-wide celebration of Cinco de Mayo Tuesday.
Miss Hernandez, a former East Campus student, performed with the Mariachi Origen Y Tradicion band and generated excitement in the Southwest Campus pavilion packed with students.
Student Esmeralda Ramirez presented a brief history of Cinco de Mayo (fifth of May), a day that commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations, according to history.com.
Many students dressed in Cinco de Mayo attire danced free-style and participated in their own special dance presentations by grade level.
