On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to welcome you to what promises to be an exciting school year.
We have been very busy hiring new staff and completing projects that will make attending The Varnett Public School an unforgettable experience for you and your children. I want to express my appreciation to the Board of Trustees for its continued support as we embark on continuing our “Legacy of Excellence.”
For the 2019-20 school year that starts August 19, we are maintaining our primary focus on continuous improvement in academics with an emphasis on reading for students in grades PK-8. We are placing renewed emphasis on fully implementing Guided Reading in grades PK-2, using reading specialists in grades 2 and 3 and employing instructional coaches to guide reading development in grades 4-8.
The second goal is to maintain our focus on our technology initiative. This initiative intends to provide greater access to technology and promote active digital learning. We will provide Kindles for students in grades PK-2 and Chromebooks for students in grades 3-8. The use of these classroom tools will support Varnett’s desire to be the leading innovator in the use of technology.
The third goal is to increase the meaningful participation of parents and community members through our Parent Empowerment Program. Our commitment is to provide parents with the resources and strategies needed to help students learn at high levels. You are invited to be an active participant in your child’s education.
This school year we have many challenges such as enhancing academics and improving attendance. However, we enter this year with a growth mindset and believe we have in place an incredible staff, all of whom are determined to have each child experience success. It is my privilege to work with you and such a committed team who challenges, supports and celebrates student learning.
And finally, I would like to thank you, parents, for making The Varnett Public School your school of choice. We are committed to excellence in all things!
Dr. Margaret Stroud
