Students, parents and staff enjoy Field Day

Field Day was a huge success at Varnett’s Southwest campus today as several hundred students competed on the field, danced and enjoyed the refreshments.

Parents and staff joined the fun but were kept busy by making sure the students were organized, safe and fed.

The excitement came a week before classes are adjourned for the summer. Superintendent Annette Cluff organized the event to show Varnett’s appreciation for the students’ hard work and for the parents who have supported the district.

The pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students from each campus engaged in Olympic-style activities, such as the 10-yard dash, soccer, basketball, hula hoop marathon, bunny hop and the water relay. The concession stands were busy as participants sought relief from Houston’s heat.

The DJ was a huge hit as students and adults alike danced to the music.
Parent volunteers really stepped up in doing whatever was necessary to ensure a smooth and fun-filled day.

“I just like to make it easier for the teachers to help the kids settle down,” said Alero Omoregbe, a parent of a pre-kindergarten student and a kindergartner. “The food, the drinks, the games, everything was nice.”

She said this was her third Field Day event and today’s was the best. “It was well organized,” she said. Asked if she had anything to add, she said, “Varnett is a good school. I would recommend it to anybody.”
