Cheerleaders follow MLK Day parade with Firefighters Children's Parade in Galveston

Encore!

Many of the same Varnett cheerleaders who participated in the MLK Day Parade in Houston on January 17, 2022, demonstrated their skills again at the 17th Annual Firefighters Children's Parade in Galveston on Sunday, February 27, 2022.

This time, in the spirit of Mardi Gras, the 24 Southwest campus cheerleaders from grades 3 through 8 were joined by two members of the basketball team, who tossed beads into the crowd.

The theme of the parade was "A Salute to Board Games." The route began at 25th Street and Santa Fe Place,  headed south to Postoffice Street and proceeded east before turning west on Strand Street. It concluded at 25th and Strand.

The Varnett team used the occasion to visit the Galveston Railroad Museum and take a tour of The Historic Strand District.

Accompanying the students were:

Mr. Jesse Arps - Campus Director
Ms. Tamara Harrison - Instructional Coach
Ms. Dedra Glasco - Instructional Facilitator
Ms. Francesca Mims - 7th & 8th Grade ELAR Teacher
Mr. Kendrick Donahoe - 7th & 8th Grade Math Teacher
Ms. Jeleesha Dukes - 4th Grade ELAR Teacher

Ms. Glasco said she used a connection with a firefighter to enlist the group for the parade and received the blessing of Dr. Margaret Stroud, Varnett's Superintendent.

Great job, team, and way to represent Varnett!
