Campus directors have a direct line to teachers, students

Varnett has greatly enhanced its communications system throughout the district.

Campus directors can now address their entire school through an intercom and phone system that allows instant communication with teachers and students. Eventually, the superintendent will have the capability of addressing entire campuses with the use of the InformaCast system supplied by Singlewire, said Jeff Siler, the district’s technology coordinator. The system has been installed at all three campuses, Southwest Pre-K and the Administration Building and includes 121 phones with one in each classroom. The key benefits include districtwide notification, emergency notification and a school bell system.

“You can communicate instantly with teachers and have private conversations with them,” Southwest Campus director Twilet Alexander said of the system’s phone component.

Mrs. Alexander has been using the intercom system for students in her office to lead the school in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the Pledge of Allegiance to the Texas Flag, the Varnett pledge and schoolwide announcements. She said she plans to mix up the announcements so every student will have a chance to use the intercom. “I will come up with a script every day,” she said

Parents will not be able to call directly into the classrooms and must still go through the school clerks, district officials said.
