Food Service: January is the month for oatmeal, wheat bread and soup

January is National Oatmeal Month, National Wheat Bread Month and National Soup Month. Varnett will be serving breakfast and lunch meals that will be in line with these observances.

We recognize the economical and dietary importance of wheat production, a budget-friendly, nutritious food source for consumers. Whole wheat flour is rich in B-vitamins, vitamin E and protein, and contains more trace minerals and dietary fiber than white flour does.

The cold weather makes January the perfect time to eat soup, and oatmeal is a great source of B vitamins and calcium, which take longer to digest so you feel better. Studies show that oatmeal also helps lower cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease.

While we celebrate these meals in January, Varnett is committed to providing healthy and nutritious meals throughout the school year.  For a daily schedule of meals, click here.
