Ms. Shanti Bhatt, writing coach for The Varnett Public School, recently selected top 7th-grade student essays throughout the district for publication.
This expository essay is one in a continuing series.
Students had three hours to edit and revise reading passages, followed by writing an essay. "This is on-the-spot writing," Ms. Bhatt said.
Scores were based on:
- Audience and purpose. (Clearly stating the author's position and effectively persuading the reader of the validity of the author's beliefs.)
- Organization
- Elaboration
- Use of Language
