Message from the Superintendent

August 2024

Dear Varnett Family:

Welcome back! So much excitement is in the air as we begin the 2024-25 school year and launch our 40th Anniversary! Our theme for the new school year is: We are One! You will continue to hear me use these words as we continue to develop a stronger school community and thrive as one district. If it is excellent for one school then it is excellent for all. Let’s continue to build on our belief in the possibilities—our potential is limitless!

We have literally weathered the storm here in Houston over the past couple of months. I am thankful that as a school family, our staff members were safe and supportive of each other. I am asking for your patience and grace as we continue working to repair our facilities. From air conditioning units, flooring, rooftops, we are working hard to prepare for the arrival of our students. Our plans to build new facilities are on hold for the moment, however, I will continue to advocate for renovations and better equipped facilities that include flexible space, labs, gyms and multi-purpose rooms. This is what our students, staff and families need and deserve.

We recently entered a partnership with Region IV to create a district strategic plan. This plan will align our district priorities and provide a clearly defined path to move our district forward. We are also partnering with the region to implement NTIA, a teacher incentive program that will foster a culture of continuous improvement, encourage teachers to innovate, collaborate, and ensure that students receive the highest quality education. I am excited to bring this opportunity to Varnett.to reward you for your dedication and hard work.

We will continue our work with evidence-based curriculum and strategies through Eureka Math and the newly adopted HMH and McGraw-Hill Science programs. Also the implementation of the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) process, will be strengthened by ensuring strong core instruction and interventions for all students at tier I, II and III, behaviorally and academically. Further, we are returning to breakfast in classrooms, community circles and the implementation of Second Step, a social emotional curriculum to address emotional management, problem solving and good decision making. The lessons will support a positive, inclusive school environment where everyone can thrive.

I wish you a successful start to an incredible school year as we launch the 5th decade together, and celebrate the greatness within Varnett. Continue to “stay the course” as we work together for excellence as ONE. One Vision. One Mission. One Legacy of Excellence.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nita White
